The Single Cheetah expresses freedom and flight, both in the representation of the quickest mammal on earth and indelibly created in the medium itself.Three challenges, equally daunting, faced Dan when we conceived of this piece. In each case, the base, over which flies the cheetah, was the resolution to the problem. Technically: how could Dan liberate the sculpture from sitting or standing on the ground? The inherent process and physical properties of clay do not allow him to place such a figure on one foot. The sculpture would undoubtedly collapse. In design: how could he poise the dashing cat without visually obstructing the line of its slim, muscular body? In spirit: how could he capture the beauty of the cheetahs soaring flight? Surely, no paws could touch the ground. Dan says, The base, in the right proportion and in the right position, resolves all three problems simplistically and beautifully.
